Why the Public Registry Is Incomplete

Colorado’s public website includes sexually violent predators, adult multiple sexual or violent felony offenders, adult felony failure-to-register cases, and adults currently registered after felony sex-offense convictions. Misdemeanor-only adult registrants and juvenile adjudications generally are not posted. Sealed or protected information also remains outside the ordinary public view.

An hourly update schedule reduces delay but cannot guarantee that every address or status is correct at the instant of a search. A name and birth date do not provide fingerprint-level identification. Confirm a significant concern with the registering agency rather than confronting the person listed.

Jurisdiction boundaries create another source of false confidence. The Mancos Marshal’s warning says its display does not cover Cortez Police or MCSO registrants. A Montezuma County mailing address can fall within a different registering territory than expected. Run the statewide CBI search first, use the appropriate local view as a second layer, and use NSOPW when movement across Colorado, neighboring states, or tribal jurisdictions is relevant.

The dynamic portal did not expose a safe complete field inventory without opening a private person’s record, so unverified vehicle, tattoo, or risk fields should not be assumed.

That office can explain statewide records, while local registration changes and immediate compliance concerns should also go to the responsible police or sheriff agency.

Registration Requirements and Levels in Colorado

Colorado does not present the public registry as the federal three-tier duration chart. Its public interface uses statutory categories, while duration and verification duties depend on the offense, governing statute, and any court relief. Do not infer a term from a category label alone.

Juvenile registration generally terminates at age 25 or seven years after registration began, whichever is later, absent a later disqualifying adult conviction. Current law and the particular court order control an individual case.

Registration at MCSO Records

Report suspected noncompliance to local law enforcement or the CBI tip line. Supply observable facts and the relevant profile or jurisdiction information rather than attempting personal enforcement.

Area-list and named-juvenile requests use different CBI procedures. Adult area lists are mailed with the required payment form and are not accepted by fax or email. A named-juvenile request requires the full name, while birth date, county of adjudication, case or docket number, and gender can help identify the record. The requester must explain the need and affirm the statutory use limits. CBI may respond by mail or email, and the official research identifies no fee for that named-juvenile request.

Use NSOPW Across State Lines

The National Sex Offender Public Website is the official cross-state layer when a person, former address, or nearby area may fall outside Colorado.

NSOPW brings participating state, territorial, and tribal public registries into one search path, but each source jurisdiction still controls its published data and limits.

For adult area-list requests beyond the website, CBI requires mail, the applicable fee, and its payment form; fax and email are not accepted. A named-juvenile request requires a full name, an explanation of need, and an affirmation of use restrictions, with optional date of birth, adjudication county, case number, and gender.

CBI may return the named-juvenile response by mail or email, but the request process does not convert juvenile registry information into a general public list. Give only the identifiers the official form requests and explain the permitted need accurately. For an adult area list, confirm the current fee and payment instructions with CBI before mailing because the research does not support inventing an amount.

Lawful Use and Community Notification

Registry information supports personal, family, and community safety planning. It does not authorize retaliation, independent surveillance, threats, or publication of protected information. Community notification for a sexually violent predator follows official agency procedures, and the CBI NOTIFICATIONS function should be used on its stated terms.

C.R.S. §16-22-110 governs public dissemination. Contact MCSO or CBI about a suspected error or noncompliance and let the agency verify the record. Never use registry data to harass, intimidate, coerce, cause serious emotional distress, expose prohibited juvenile information, or seek unlawful financial gain.
